What types of design do the programs cover?
I'm not sure what type of design job I want. Should I still enroll?
Absolutely! One of the best parts about working with a mentor is that they’ve been working in the design field for a while and know all about the different types of roles (and the best personality types for each of them), so they can help guide you based on your interests, personality, and style.
How is this different from a normal bootcamp?
Our Mentor Programs are built around the concept that there are a lot of great design courses out there that teach you design fundamentals, but leave you all alone for the hardest part — building a portfolio and actually landing a job. The same is true for normal bootcamps, which assume every student is at the same skill level and therefore require you to go through the same structured curriculum and projects as everyone else, even if you have already started learning design or just want to work with a mentor to achieve something specific to your goals! Our Mentor Programs take the best part of bootcamps (the mentorship) and separate them from the curriculum, so you can spend 100% of your time in the program working with your mentor on projects that match your goals and your goals alone!
Is this for total beginners?
We recommend that you have at least 1-2 months of studying design on your own before enrolling. While you’re welcome to enroll as a total beginner and work with your mentor to put together a learning action plan, you’ll probably get the most out of the program if you already have a basic understanding of the design process and have played around with design tools like Figma and Sketch a bit on your own. On the other hand, if all you want is a mentor as you start learning design, then you should definitely still consider enrolling!
I'm already pretty experienced in Design. Do I really need this?
While we can’t answer for everyone, most RookieUp students are 3-12 months into studying Design and realize that they want to work with a mentor to help them get over some sort of blocker or challenge. This could be getting projects portfolio-ready, finding the right jobs, or even interviewing. You’ll get paired with the perfect mentor no matter how far along you are.
I prefer learning design on my own. Why do I need a mentor?
There are a ton of great design courses online, and most people prefer self-study over a classroom format. But 1-on-1 mentorship is proven to help you achieve your career goals faster (it’s why $15k+ bootcamps focus on it so much), so combining your own self-study with a mentor who is there to help anything you get stuck or want feedback is the best possible career-prep combo!
I like structure. Is this the right program for me in that case?
Our programs are designed to be flexible and customized to your goals. As such, there’s no mandatory curriculum or rigid tasks. You can use the time with your mentor however you want to. However, we know that many people like structure, so we also provide optional week-by-week frameworks that show our recommendations for get the most out of the program that you can use if you want a bit more structure
Will I get a job after finishing a Mentor Program?
While we can’t guarantee a job (fun fact — $15k bootcamps also don’t guarantee jobs!), we can say that many of our students find internships or jobs within a few months of finishing the program. Working with a mentor is a surefire way to progress much more quickly than you will on your own and get the insight of an experienced designer to help you build a portfolio that will wow employers. And if you’re enrolling in our Building or Launching programs, you’ll also get time with a dedicated recruiter to create your career action plan!
